A Security Review Is Delaying the Proposal: Respond With Evidence
By Antony Draper · Published 8 November 2026 · For B2B agency, consultancy and specialist-service owners
Security questions need accurate answers and appropriate evidence. Clarify the requirement and its owner without treating a genuine risk review as a sales objection to overcome.
Understand the situation before responding
Ask which part of the proposed service triggers review: access, data processing, integrations or supplier policy. Establish who can explain the requirement and what evidence format is accepted. Check your actual service design and documentation before answering. Do not claim certification, controls, data locations or deletion practices that you cannot verify. Share sensitive technical material through an appropriate channel rather than attaching it indiscriminately to a sales thread.
An example message to adapt
Which security requirement is currently unresolved, and who is reviewing it? We can answer against our actual service design and provide the evidence we hold. If a requirement is outside our current capability, we will state that clearly so both teams can decide whether the proposed scope remains appropriate.
Illustrative teaching example. Replace the prompts with buyer-confirmed facts; this is not a client conversation, claimed result or message to send automatically.
Prepare a useful next action
Track each question, evidence source, responsible reviewer and outstanding gap. Involve the person who owns the relevant technical or operational control. If the buyer suggests changing access or data handling, check that the revised delivery remains feasible and update the scope where needed. Avoid promising future controls with an assumed completion date. Clarify whether review is a prerequisite to supplier approval, contract signature or system access.
Record the decision and its limits
Record the actual review outcome and any conditions attached. A submitted questionnaire is not a security approval. If the requirement cannot be met, discuss a legitimate reduced-access scope or decline the work rather than working around the control. Keep the sponsor informed about implications for timing without pressuring the reviewer to waive requirements to meet your sales target.
