Your Buyer Is Comparing Suppliers: Clarify the Decision Criteria

By Antony Draper · Published 8 November 2026 · For B2B agency, consultancy and specialist-service owners

Help the buyer compare the work that matters. Understand their criteria and provide accurate scope information without speculating about competitors.

Understand the situation before responding

Ask whether the comparison is about price, delivery approach, capability, risk or a formal procurement requirement. Find out whether every supplier is answering the same written requirements and which criteria the buyer considers essential. Some buyers need multiple quotes regardless of their preference. Do not assume that a request for another supplier quote signals rejection. Review whether your own proposal clearly states deliverables, exclusions, client inputs and total investment so it can be compared fairly.

An example message to adapt

That makes sense. What criteria will matter most when you compare the options, and is there anything in our scope that is difficult to compare? I can clarify our approach and exclusions, but I would rather work from your decision criteria than make assumptions about the other suppliers or their offers.

Illustrative teaching example. Replace the prompts with buyer-confirmed facts; this is not a client conversation, claimed result or message to send automatically.

Prepare a useful next action

Prepare a factual comparison of your own option against the buyer criteria. Mark any criterion you cannot meet. If the buyer shares another offer, respect confidentiality and do not copy its proprietary material. Compare equivalent outcomes and responsibilities rather than headline fees alone. Explain genuine differences in support, scope and dependencies without making unsupported claims that another supplier will fail.

Record the decision and its limits

Confirm the evaluation process, who decides and whether further information would materially change their assessment. If you cannot meet an essential requirement, acknowledge it rather than obscuring the gap. Keep any proposed clarification separate from a discount or revised commitment. A well-informed loss can be healthier than winning work that your delivery model cannot support.
