“We Need to Think About It”: Find the Unanswered Question

By Antony Draper · Published 8 November 2026 · For B2B agency, consultancy and specialist-service owners

Give the buyer space while clarifying what remains uncertain. A request to think is not automatically a price objection or permission for an aggressive objection-handling sequence.

Understand the situation before responding

Look at the discussion immediately before the reply. Did you introduce new cost, a long commitment or a difficult operational change? The buyer may need to consider risk, compare priorities or speak to another stakeholder. Acknowledge that a business decision deserves thought. Avoid demanding an immediate explanation or presenting an ultimatum because your own process expects a faster answer.

An example message to adapt

Of course. To avoid sending information that does not help, is there a particular question you are weighing up: the scope, the investment, the timing or confidence in delivery? If you would rather review it privately first, when would it be useful for us to reconnect, if at all?

Illustrative teaching example. Replace the prompts with buyer-confirmed facts; this is not a client conversation, claimed result or message to send automatically.

Prepare a useful next action

Listen for a concrete concern and explore that concern before offering a remedy. If they are unsure whether their team can implement the work, clarify client responsibilities and readiness. If they need internal approval, ask what the approver needs. If they simply want space, respect it and agree whether any follow-up is welcome. Send one relevant piece of information rather than a bundle of generic persuasion material.

Record the decision and its limits

Record what remains undecided in the buyer own words. A period to think should have an agreed follow-up or be treated as unconfirmed, rather than a hidden commitment to buy. If the contact declines further conversation, close gracefully. The objective is informed consent to a useful next action, not overcoming hesitation at any commercial or relationship cost.
