Accountability that disappears when the founder stops checking

When follow-through depends on founder reminders, inspect how ownership, evidence and review are built into the team's rhythm. The issue may be an absent management mechanism rather than a lack of care.

Look at the evidence

  1. Trace three commitments from agreement to review.

  2. Identify who noticed progress, delay or completion.

  3. Check what happens when the owner misses an agreed point.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

A manager delivers when reminded privately, but the operating meeting has no shared record or exception review. Founder chasing fills that gap.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

Increasing personal reminders can improve short-term compliance while strengthening the dependency.

Leadership independence is compatible with valuable founder involvement. Look for managers who can own outcomes within clear boundaries, coordinate shared constraints and surface risk appropriately. An org chart or confident meeting performance is a starting point for questions, not proof that the team can operate independently.

Is accountability the same as punishment?

No. It includes a clear outcome, usable authority, visible evidence and a fair response when reality differs from the agreement.
