Decision delays across departments

Cross-team delays often arise when each manager has authority locally but nobody owns the shared constraint. Examine the trade-off between outcomes rather than blaming the slowest department.

Look at the evidence

  1. Choose a decision involving two or more teams.

  2. List the outcomes and constraints each team is protecting.

  3. Identify who can resolve the shared trade-off and what information they need.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

Sales promises a date delivery cannot support. Neither team can change the other's commitment, so every conflict reaches the founder.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

Giving each department more local freedom can worsen the conflict if shared resources remain ungoverned.

Decision independence combines a named owner with usable authority, relevant information and appropriate escalation. Look at ordinary cases as well as exceptions. Formal restrictions may be entirely appropriate; the question is whether the route is deliberate and workable rather than an invisible queue for the founder.
