A single source of truth for operating decisions

A single source of truth should mean an agreed authoritative record for a defined fact. It does not require every business question to use the same system or hide conflicts between legitimate sources.

Look at the evidence

  1. Name the decision and facts required.

  2. Identify the authoritative source and accountable owner for each fact.

  3. Document reconciliation and freshness when sources disagree.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

The CRM owns opportunity stage while finance owns paid invoices. A reporting view can combine them without pretending either is the other's source of record.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

Creating a second manually maintained truth in a dashboard can add another reconciliation problem.

Useful operating information has an understood definition, source, owner and freshness. Keep observations separate from assumptions and forecasts. A reporting view can support the management team, but it should not create a second manually maintained record or turn an unknown value into a reassuring zero.

Do we need one application for everything?

Not necessarily. Clear source ownership and reliable joins can matter more than the number of applications.
