Conflicting numbers across the management team

Different numbers may reflect timing, definitions or genuinely inconsistent sources. Reconcile one decision-critical discrepancy before declaring that a new reporting platform is required.

Look at the evidence

  1. Choose a disagreement affecting a real decision.

  2. Compare the metric definitions, periods and source records.

  3. Assign an owner for the agreed measure and known limitations.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

Sales reports booked revenue while delivery reports recognised work. The difference may be legitimate if the team understands which question each number answers.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

Forcing a single total without preserving its meaning can conceal rather than resolve the conflict.

Useful operating information has an understood definition, source, owner and freshness. Keep observations separate from assumptions and forecasts. A reporting view can support the management team, but it should not create a second manually maintained record or turn an unknown value into a reassuring zero.

Must all reports show identical figures?

Only where they claim the same measure for the same scope and period. Different legitimate measures need clear labels.
