Key knowledge held in the founder's head

Critical knowledge becomes an operating dependency when others need it to maintain service but cannot access or interpret it. Prioritise knowledge by consequence, frequency and available substitutes.

Look at the evidence

  1. List recent occasions when work stopped for your explanation.

  2. Identify the specific knowledge or judgement requested.

  3. Check how it could be demonstrated, recorded and tested by another role.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

Only the founder knows why a major customer has an unusual delivery requirement. A customer record plus a reviewed example may reduce that reliance.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

Recording a long interview does not prove somebody else can use the knowledge when the relevant case arrives.

Delivery independence needs evidence from real work, including the exceptions that make the business difficult to run. A process document, quiet holiday or completed checklist is not enough on its own. Check whether another capable and authorised role can maintain the agreed outcome under representative conditions.

Your evidence check

Bring supporting and contrary examples. A self-reported answer is a starting point; these notes do not calculate or validate a score.

Can every kind of expertise be documented?

No. Some requires development, judgement or specialist authority. Identify the practical substitute rather than assuming a document is enough.
