Leadership depth and key person dependency

A business can reduce reliance on the founder while becoming equally dependent on another individual. Examine whether knowledge, relationships and authority have credible coverage rather than merely moving the bottleneck.

Look at the evidence

  1. Identify critical roles beyond the founder.

  2. Check named alternates and their actual readiness.

  3. Test whether records and authority support continuity in a suitable scenario.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

An operations director handles everything independently, but nobody can cover their decisions during absence. Founder reliance fell while key person exposure remains.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

Avoid a misleading conclusion

An organisation chart listing a deputy does not prove that the deputy can perform the required work.

Leadership independence is compatible with valuable founder involvement. Look for managers who can own outcomes within clear boundaries, coordinate shared constraints and surface risk appropriately. An org chart or confident meeting performance is a starting point for questions, not proof that the team can operate independently.

Does founder independence eliminate key person risk?

No. It addresses one important form of dependency; wider continuity and succession require separate evidence.
