One decision. Clear ownership. · Start the handover

Agreeing the outcome before handing over work

A handover becomes difficult when the founder expects a result that was never stated. Describe the observable outcome and important constraints before debating the recipient's preferred method.

Put it into practice

  1. Name the customer or internal outcome.

  2. Agree how it will be checked and by when.

  3. Separate essential standards from your personal preferences about method.

Illustrative example

A case to think through

A weekly pipeline update may need current next actions and dates, rather than a particular slide design. Accuracy and usefulness are the standards; formatting may be flexible.

This is a hypothetical operating example, not a client result.

A boundary worth checking

Correcting harmless differences in method can teach the recipient that every choice still needs your approval.

A useful first handover is small enough to test and meaningful enough to matter. Keep the original work records so the review can distinguish what was agreed from what happened. If the recipient cannot explain a suitable ordinary case and an exception, clarify the agreement before expanding it.

Should I specify how the work is done?

Specify necessary controls and standards. Leave reasonable room for judgement where the method itself is not part of the risk.
